How to Find and Join a DayZ Server

DayZ is a hardcore open-world survival game set in a post-apocalyptic landscape swarming with infected. With thousands of community servers offering vastly different experiences — from vanilla survival to heavily modded PvP arenas — finding the right server can make or break your experience. This guide helps you navigate the options and get connected.

Understanding DayZ Server Types

DayZ servers broadly fall into a few categories. Vanilla or lightly modded servers stick close to the original DayZ experience — scarce loot, no third-person camera abuse, and long survival loops. These are ideal if you want the authentic DayZ experience.

PvP-focused servers often increase loot spawns, add custom weapons, and feature more militarized areas. PvE servers disable player-vs-player combat and focus on cooperative survival against the infected and the environment. Roleplay servers enforce in-character communication and story-driven gameplay, often with whitelisting and application processes.

Heavily modded servers can transform DayZ into something barely recognizable — adding traders, base-building systems, custom maps, helicopters, and more. Check the server's mod list before connecting.

How to Connect

The easiest way to join a DayZ server is through the in-game server browser. Launch DayZ, click Play, then Change Server. You can filter by map (Chernarus, Livonia, or modded maps), first/third person perspective, and ping. Find the server from your LobbyLink listing and click Play.

For modded servers, you'll need the DayZ Launcher (built into Steam) or a third-party launcher like DZSA Launcher. These automatically download required mods from the Steam Workshop when you connect. If a mod fails to download, subscribe to it manually on the Workshop page.

If you prefer direct connect, open the server browser, click Direct Connect, and enter the IP and port (default 2302) from the LobbyLink listing.

Choosing a Map

Chernarus is DayZ's original and most popular map — a massive 225km² post-Soviet landscape with forests, cities, and military bases. It's the default choice for new players.

Livonia is a smaller, denser map with more forests and swamps. It was added as DLC and requires purchase to play on Livonia servers.

Custom modded maps like Namalsk, Deer Isle, and Esseker offer entirely different terrain, loot tables, and atmospheres. These are installed automatically when you connect through a mod-compatible launcher.
