Game Modes Explained
L4D2 community servers run several distinct game modes. Coop is the classic 4-player experience — survive through campaigns fighting AI-controlled infected. Versus pits a team of survivors against player-controlled special infected in alternating rounds.
Survival mode challenges you to hold out against endless hordes for as long as possible. Scavenge is a competitive mode where teams race to collect gas cans. Custom servers may run Mutations — special rule sets that dramatically change gameplay, like melee-only or all-Tank rounds.
Many servers run custom campaigns downloaded from the Steam Workshop, adding dozens of new maps and stories beyond the official campaigns. Some servers specialise in specific campaigns or difficulty levels.
How to Connect
In L4D2, click Play Online, then Community Servers to browse the server list. You can filter by game mode, map, and player count. To connect directly, open the developer console with ~ and type "connect IP:PORT" using the address from the LobbyLink listing.
For servers running custom content, L4D2 will download the required files automatically when you connect. Workshop maps are also downloaded through Steam. If a server requires specific addons, check their listing description for links.
L4D2 supports up to 32 players on modded servers, though the default is 4 for coop and 8 for versus.
